Smoking Inside? Yes We Can

Posted by admin On May - 2 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The days of lighting up in pubs, bars restaurants and planes are over. Or are they? The invention of the electronic cigarette many smokers are lighting up their LEDS inside because nothing is burning, it’s just vapor!

Also known as the e cig, smoking with these technological devices has brought numerous benefits to smokers. By using this device smokers are no longer forced to ingest tar into their lungs, simply because there is none. The device vaporizes a liquid stored in the “filter” area trough an atomizer or heated coil. When an e smoker pulls on the filter thick clouds of warm steam can be seen emitting from their mouth. It looks and feels almost identical to smoking.

Another added benefit worth mentioning are is that e cigs contain 4000 chemicals less than traditional cigarettes. Smoldering cigarettes are also the leading cause of fire deaths each year in America. With an e cigarette you don’t have any fire hazards.

Electronic cigarettes are also more environmentally friendly.  Each year cigarettes cause maintenance workers over $3 billion. But with all these added benefits that clearly make it a safer option than traditional cigarettes, the e cig is encountering resistance.

The FDA has latched onto the product from the beginning citing it is not safe. In 2008 the agency impounded large amounts of the product from two major suppliers in the states. The FDA was later sued for their actions by both companies.  A federal judge ruling resulted in favor of the companies giving a solid victory to the industry.

As the product continues to increase in popularity, many individual smokers are reporting their ability to cut down and in some cases quit smoking completely. To date there have trials on the product from researchers over the world. Results were quite positive. E cigs were passed out to 349 individuals in South Africa. After a 3 month period 45 percent of them reported successful cessation to all tobacco products.

This ruling came after e- cigarette manufacturers Smoking Everywhere Inc. and NJOY sued the FDA for impounding shipments that contained their electronic cigarettes, back in September 2008. They alleged that the Federal Drug Administration did not have the proper authority to seize their electric cigarette imports.

The court also came to the following conclusion, “FDA cites no evidence that [e-cigarettes] … are any more an immediate threat to public health and safety than traditional cigarettes, which are readily available.”

While the case is still being litigated, there can be no federal restrictions on e-cigarette marketing. So, electronic cigarette companies such as Smoking Everywhere Inc. and NJOY can continue to market their electronic smoking devices as they wish.

However, since electronic cigarettes are smoking devices that are being compared to traditional cigarettes, they might fall under a new law that came into place in June 2009. At the time the e-cigarettes were seized by the FDA in 2008, this law did not yet exist. Under this new law, the federal Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, it could give the FDA the legal right to regulate e-cigarettes as a tobacco product. The anti-smoking organization Action on Smoking and Health, petitioned the FDA to regulate e-cigarettes. Its executive director, Banzhaf, stated, “The judge said several times he considers [an e-cigarette] the functional equivalent of a cigarette.” He thinks that the FDA can begin by at least issuing advisory warnings about electronic cigarettes, until new rules are created that will restrict the marketing efforts of c-cigarette manufactures.

Electronic Cigarette Assn. President Matt Salmon stated, “E-cigarette makers are not averse to reasonable regulation that allows their products to be left on the market.” And he further went on to say, “Companies are not making health claims about their products. This is simply an alternative to tobacco. It’s clear that over half a million people are dying every year due to tobacco-related illnesses, and we ought to be figuring out ways to provide a mechanism for people to do things other than smoke something that emits carbon monoxide.”

This relatively new alternative to smoking regular tobacco cigarettes has created some controversy; however, in the meantime, electronic cigarette smokers can rest easy and continue smoking their e-cigs until further legislation is passed on this topic.

Future of Electric Cigarette Unclear

Bill Wilson is another electronic cigarette smoker that worries about the future of his new found smoking alternative. The 45 year old quit smoking regular cigarettes a few months ago. Wilson claims his breathing is just one of the things that improved since he switched.

The device he smokes is made up of a battery, atomizer, and cartridges filled with nicotine and other flavored chemicals. When the user inhales, the LED lights up and the atomizer heats the solution into a vapor. Many states are already looking into banning these products. Wilson has his opinion on the matter. “Did you know electric cigarettes have 4,000 chemicals less than traditional cigarettes?” He says taking a drag. “And did you know that these devices give off no secondhand smoke, thus don’t post a risk to others?”

Amy Linert, a spokeswoman for the Electronic Cigarette Association agrees that the devices pose no risk at all for nonusers. And the cartridges can be purchased with no nicotine at all. Last year, she said, these battery operated cigarettes made up $100 million in sales. The FDA, continues to advise against the product saying electric cigarettes are still not safe. Carcinogens and other toxic chemicals may still be present. The FDA has made several attempts to try to suspend national sales of e cigs but the laws aren’t exactly concrete.

For now some manufacturers are under importation restrictions. Entrepreneur Don Talley who manufactures electric cigarettes says they’ve ban importation in some states but we’ve found ways around it. All the products are being assembled and shipped in the USA. Talley claims this is a positive restriction and allows him to control the quality of his products better.

Other e cig manufacturers are preparing for a longer battle. Many say if push comes to shove they will still sell the products but without the nicotine solution. “There are ways around this, it’s going to be an inconvenience but this product is safer than traditional cigarettes.” says Harold Green, who also sells the products. “I just can’t imagine them making these illegal when traditional cigarettes are still killing 400,000 smokers each year.”

For now people like Bill Wilson continue to buy while manufactures such as Don Talley are working hard to evolve and distribute the product.

E-Cigarettes Make 45% of South Africans Quitters

Posted by admin On April - 20 - 2010 1 COMMENT

According to a local study in South Africa, 45 percent of smoking Africans reported successful tobacco cessation within two months while using electronic cigarettes.

Doctors carried out tests over an eight week period and passed out 349 electronic cigarettes to smokers. The new cigarette technology delivers nicotine through a cartridge that is screwed onto the casing of the device. An atomizer then vaporizes the liquid which is then inhaled by the e smoker. All doctors that were involved in the study agreed that electronic cigarettes were a healthier choice when compared to traditional tobacco.

Highlights from the study revealed:

  • Within two weeks use of the electronic cigarette, six percent are able to kick the habit. After 8 weeks 45 percent of them gave up the traditional smokes.
  • 49 percent of the participants claimed that the nicotine cravings were the hardest part of the battle while 24 percent said it was the smoking habit itself. The remaining 27 percent agreed that the combination of nicotine, habit, taste and actual feeling is what made it a challenge.
  • while using the electronic cigarettes, 52 percent of the participants claimed to have a changed and more healthy physical appearance. They also reported not feeling as drowsy and a higher stamina.

What the Doctors Reported

The participating doctors agreed that e cigarettes are an effective method for treating cigarette addiction. They further agreed that the e cigarette could defeat the physical and psychological dependence that traditional cigarettes bring. The study was so successful that a few of the doctors used the product to curtail their tobacco habits. General practitioner, Dr Kishore Deva was one of the doctors who decided to give the electronic cigarette a go. Dr. Deva found that 10 to 15 puffs equated to the same amount of nicotine derived from a traditional cigarette.

Prof Martin Veller, is the Head Vascular Surgeon at the University of the Witwatersrand participated in the study. He was quick to see the benefits of the electronic cigarette and quickly passed it to his wife and family members. Prof Veller said his wife was a heavy smoker and has since fully replaced her traditional cigarettes with the electronic ones. Having seen the success of his own wife he is now suggesting the electronic cigarette to all his smoking patients.

Dr Murray Laugeson, head of Health New Zealand carried out some research tests on the electronic cigarette products. According to the results Dr. Laugeson reported the e cigarettes to be very safe compared to traditional ones. The results were also deemed very safe in terms of absolute measurements.

“Using micro-electronics, an e-cigrarette vaporises, separately for each puff, very small quantities of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol, two small well-known molecules with excellent safety profiles, into a fine aerosol. Each puff contains one third to one half the nicotine in a tobacco cigarette’s puff. The cartridge liquid is tobacco-free and no combustion occurs.”

Overall positive results for the electronic cigarette.

Illinois Legistlation Delayed for E Cigarettes

Posted by admin On April - 19 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Advocates of electronic cigarettes aren’t allowing their chosen alternative to tobacco to become contraband in Illinois quietly.

The Illinois Senate passed legislation that would prevent the sale of the battery-operated e-cigarettes with little attention last month. That changed this morning in a House committee to consider the legislation, SB3174.

The plastic cylinders often look like real cigarettes but dispense a vapor rather than smoke, along with a dose of nicotine.

Former smokers who use the products and retailers who supply them objected to an outright ban, suggesting that lawmakers should look at regulation of e-cigarettes first. Several former smokers said they tried every FDA-approved smoking cessation tool but still couldn’t quit the habit until finding the e-cigarettes.

State Rep. Constance Howard, D-Chicago, said she also was a former smoker and understood how difficult quitting could be.

“I just wish there was something like these around before my mother died,” she said, to applause from the assembled e-cigarette proponents.

Sponsoring state Rep. Marlow Colvin, D-Chicago, said the FDA hasn’t approved the products yet and have found examples of carcinogens and other chemicals in the cartridges. He and lobbyist Kathy Drea with the American Lung Association said the state should prevent people from buying the e-cigarettes until the FDA has ruled on their safety.

But at the request of committee members asking for more information on that process, Colvin postponed a decision on the bill until next week.
