An electric cigarette is a device that vaporizes a liquid into “smoke” that is then inhaled. Electronic cigarettes mimic the look of traditional cigarettes and can go by other names including electronic cigarette, e cig, smokeless cigarette or esmoke. The image below illustrates several components used in the make up of an e cig.

While the products look relatively simple its microprocessor will tell you otherwise. The microprocessor which acts as the brain for the e cig is programmed to displays error and safety codes via the LED. Because some electronic cigarettes come with nicotine cartridges, safety features have been built into them to prevent users from “over smoking”. In the event this occurs the microprocessor will send a message to the LED and blink. This blinking signals the attention of the user to simply take a break.
Electric Cigarette Types

There are many different types of electric cigarettes varying in colors, shapes and sizes. Some companies offer e cig skins with vibrant and colorful patterns styled to taste, while others stick to a more traditional cigarette look. The image to the left illustrates a variety of e cig shapes and sizes. When electronic cigarettes went to market back in 2004 they were quite large in size. Some users were disappointed with the feel of these bulky cigarettes and wanted a more traditional feel. Manufacturers soon began developing new sizes and shapes catering to the demands of e smokers.
Those passionate about cigars and pipes will be happy to hear that manufacturers haven’t stopped with the e cigarette. electronic cigars and electronic pipes also make up the entourage of e smoking products. Flavored cartridges mimic the taste of traditional pipes and can easily be changed out when fully consumed. Like the e cig, e cigars and pipes consist of a LED, battery, sensor, atomizer, and liquid. Overall there is little if any difference between the technologies.
Recharging and Refilling your E Cig Cartridge
Recharging and refilling are at the foundation of e smoking. As funny as it sounds, users will be required to recharge their cigarettes to keep them smoking. Refill cartridges containing the liquid or juice will also be replaced. You can purchase a variety of flavors depending on your cigarette model. For those who don’t care for the nicotine buzz cartridges without nicotine are also available. A typical cartridge is the equivalent of 1.5 packs of traditional cigarettes. Refill techniques for pipes and cigarettes are demonstrated below.

Electronic Pipe Smoking

A Brief Look at History of the E Cig
The product was initially patented by a Chinese company in 2003 called SBT CO. LTD. A series of business deals followed and soon SBT CO. LTD was absorbed by what is today known as SBT RUYAN Technology & Development Co., Ltd. In 2004 the company had already begun bringing electronic cigarettes to market but it wasn’t until 2006 that the product was introduced to Europe.
Common Problems with Electric Cigarettes
I’ve spoken to numerous vendors and suppliers of electric cigarettes. When the product first came out there was an incredibly high product return rate. Some suppliers still claim to have a return rate as high as 30%, which is why it’s important to check out the best electronic cigarette review section! As time went on the product evolved, manufacturers made necessary changes and many of the problems have been resolved. There are still a few common issues that many consumers encounter. Arguably the top two are:
- Battery – Either dies or doesn’t hold a charge long.
Possible solution – Tap the battery to make sure it’s not activating while stored in your pocket. You’ll be surprised at the number of people that are encounter this. - Atomizer – Burn outs, flooding or depleted/reduced vapor
Possible Solution
a. Burnout – Not much to do here but to buy a new one.
b. Flooding – Blow out the ends to expel extra liquid. Recharge e cig to ensure atomizer has a good enough charge to burn off the excess juice.
c. Reduced/Depleted Vapor – It’s either time for a battery recharge or cartridge refill.
Again, it’s important to research your product before you buy. Take a look through our reviews until you’re satisfied with a particular company. Order and puff away!
